...Peacebuilding and Conflict Management in North-Nigeria....

Peacebuilding and Conflict Management in Northern-Nigeria is a project implemented by TEKAN Peace Desk and funded by Bread for the World. This project is aimed at strengthening peace and security architecture as well as to promote peaceful coexistence, economic development, human rights, political stability and religious tolerance. The project is implemented in Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Borno, Taraba, Nasarawa, Benue, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Kwara, Kogi and Yobe. Church and community leaders and influencers form part of the participants and beneficiaries.

The project, currently in its fifth phase, consists of three components (objectives) namely; Peacebuilding, Inter-faith relations and psychosocial support. These three components are the bedrock for which the activities are implemented.

Activities implemented under Peacebuilding include workshops on Conflict Management (Monitoring) and Transformation, Mediation and Dialogue, Good Governance and Advocacy. Churches and communities are empowered and their capacity strengthened in managing conflicts and as active advocates of good governance. There have also been high-level engagements with heads of denominations to discuss security challenges and other development issues. The inter-faith religious component is geared towards strengthening religious tolerance between youths and women of both Christian and Muslim faiths. Indigent youths and women, who are the most vulnerable in communities, are empowered with vocational skills to improve their source of income. After undergoing training in various training centres, they are also given start-up packs to set up their businesses. Currently, over 100 youths and women have been trained and are running businesses across Northern Nigeria. One of the aftermaths of violent conflicts is trauma. Thus, trauma healing workshops are organized for adults, teenagers and children to help them develop coping strategies as well as build resilience. Over a thousand survivors of conflict have benefitted from these workshops and are already on their journey of healing.
